Cambridge YMCA Camera Club This photograph shows the members of the Cambridge YMCA Camera Club in 1901. The photograph is reproduced with the permission of cambridgeshire Archives - it is catalogue No 1047/8/4 in their collection. The photograph's mount has in manuscript the names of some, but not all of those present - making it very difficult to identify any one individual. There are 15 individuals in the photograph and 13 names on the mount. The photograph was published in the Cambridge Daily News 9 December 1939 page 5, under the headline "A peep into the Past". The caption read: "We are indebted to Mr John Johnson (seen on the left) for this photograph of the old YMCA Camera Club taken in 1901. In it are Messrs S Cowles (brother of the University Marshall), Tyler (Inspector of permanent way LNER), Bellamy (formerly with Fosters Bank), A Howard (of Messrs Marsh and Howard butchers), Goatcher (Observatory), Alphonso Smith (bootmaker), HL Smith (Messrs Heffer Petty Cury), TJ Sowdon (Ist Sec Cambridge and District Photo Club), W Hanscombe (Messrs Crossman and Co), Thrussell, F Dew (clerk to Messrs Austin coal merchants), FH Bird the Club President (vinegar manufacturer) and WH Hayles (Cavendish Laboratory) (14 names) From all of this information it would appear that we can put the following names to a few faces as follows and shown in the diagram below:
Not yet identified from the remainder are: Bellamy (formerly with Fosters Bank) Return to page on Cambridgeshire photographic Clubs |
