Old Photographs - A list of Photo Labs - Photo Processors - Finishers - D & P Works in Cambridgeshire

This list is taken mainly from Directories and Yellow Pages from the 1960s to 2000. We hope that this might be helpful if you are trying to date any packets of old photographic negatives from the Cambridgeshire area. Before this period we have noted in the main photographers' entries on this site where D and P services were offered. This page covers the period of growth of photo labs with the advent of compact mini-labs. Many chemists shops and photographic dealers took in developing and printing work, but as they passed on the actual work involved to local and other professional laboratories, they are not included here - but their customised print folders may be found - examples below from Barnes and Shrive, both of Peterborough.

University Cameras, 1 St Mary's Passage, Cambridge. Photographic retailer run by former RAF officer Gryff Reece. They ran a D and P works originally in Chesterton, then in Bridge Street, opposite King and Harper's underneath bookbinders, Stoakleys, from around 1948. Tom Johnson worked for them for some years (and describes this in his recording here). Reece's brother then started the Fencolour works which used the then leading edge Kodak Dye Transfer Process. Fencolour were in Newmarket Road at the old Star Bewery, then moved to Coldhams Road, before going to Abbey Road. One of their negative envelopes is shown below containing negatives from 1945-49.
