Name: UTTON, Arthur William Thomas b:1879 Edmonton d: 1919 Kings Norton
Address: Wellington Street, Newmarket
Working Dates: c.1910
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: see below oval mounted portrait of unknown man, no date c.1910. Also added are two mounted portraits of unknown ladies by Utton from Peter Norman's collection. It would appear that Utton operated as a photographer in Newmarket for only a few years at most and he was not listed in local trade directories. Arthur W.T. Utton was the son of a Arthur E Utton, a Newmarket born carpenter. In the 1891 census Arthur William Thomas Utton was living at Icewell Hill Newmarket with his widowed grandmother, who was also born in Newmarket and according to the census return was living on her own means. In 1906 Arthur married Florence May Lissaman, daughter of a draper, at Wolston Warwickshire. He gave his occupation as an artist. By that time his father had died. In 1908 Arthur was listed in the Kelly's Directory of Warwickshire as a hairdresser at Wolston, Coventry. In 1911 Arthur was an employer who described himself as a photographic artist and hairdresser, living with his wife, a two year old son, a servant (employed as a hairdresser) and his brother in law, at 20 High Street, Halstead, Essex. Arthur W Utton, photographer, appears in the Kelly's Directory of Worcestershire 1916 at 92 High Street, Bromsgrove. Arthur joined the RAF in 1918 and died after an operation at the 1st Birmingham War Hospital, Rubery, on 25 January 1919. Newspaper reports of his death recorded that he had been in business for a number of years at Wolston and that he was "well known in the district and his genial manner left him many friends."
