Name: RICH, Benjamin b: 1845 Fen Drayton, Cambs d:
Address: High Street, Huntingdon
Working Dates: 1871
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: Benjamin Rich appears in the 1871 census of Huntingdon as a photographer living in the High Street with his wife Mary J. b: 1851 Huntingdon. There are only four households in the census return between Benjamin and Huntingdon photographer Arthur Maddison, raising the question whether Benjamin was employed by Maddison. In any case Benjamin's career took a different course and in 1881 and 1891 Benjamin is shown resident in Cambridge, occupation - a groom.

Name:  RIGNALL, John William b:25 Mar 1874 Ossett, Yorkshire     d:

In 1901 John was living at 2 Grafton Street, Cambridge with his wife Margaret Fanny, b:1875 Cambridge, and was listed in the census return as a photographer, an employer of others. In 1911 the family had moved to 85 Regent Street Cambridge. John and Margaret's children at that time were: Doris Margaret b:1902 Cambridge, Phyllis Mary b:1905 Cambridge and Rex Marshall b:1909 Cambridge. Living with the family as a boarder was another photographer, a worker, Henry William Pond, b:1881 Feltwell, Norfolk. John was again listed in 1911 as a photographer employing others, presumably this included Henry Pond. In 1921 John and his wife and three children were living at 90 Mawson Road, Cambridge; he was a photographer and an employer based in Fitzroy Street Cambridge. In the 1939 Register, John was listed at 90 Mawson Road Cambridge with his wife and daughter Margaret. The cartes de visite below vignette portraits of unknown young ladies, on grey card, rounded corners, have impressed on the face "J W Rignall City Studio, Ely" and dates from the late 1890s early 1900s. The reverse of both mounts are blank.

Name:  ROBBINS, Sharman b:1815 Elsworth Cambs d:1891 and ROBBINS, Tom E(m)mett  b: 1844 Wisbech  d:1924
Address: 32 Norfolk Street East, Wisbech
Working Dates: c. 1869.
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: This was a father and son partnership. In 1861 Sharman Robbins and his wife Charlotte b:1817 Glos were living at 32 Norfolk Street East in Wisbech. He was a druggist. Living with them was their 17 year old son, Thomas Emett Robbins, also a druggist. In the The Market Telegraph, Supplement to the Wisbech Advertiser, Saturday 14 August 1869 p6 father and son were advertising as S and T E Robbins, chemists and photographers, at 32 Norfolk Street and the address of their studio was shown as 1 Chapel Street New Walsoken. (Thanks to Garry Monger for unearthing this reference) In 1871 Sharman was at the same place, a chemist and druggist. In 1871 Tom Emmett Robbins was living at 1 Chapel Street Wisbech with his wife Elizabeth b: 1848 Norfolk and daughter Francis A.C. b:1869 Walsoken. Tom was described as "chemist, photographer and poor and highway rate collector". In 1881 Sharman was again in the same place, his wife no longer present but his 9 year old grandson, Frank Robbins b:1872 Walsoken Norfolk, was living with him. In 1881 Tom was living at 1 Duke Street Walsoken where he was described as a rate collector. In 1891 Tom was at the same address described as a "rate collector and assistant overseer". From the single entry as a photographer in the local directory in 1869 it appears that their involvement in photography was relatively short lived. Below is an example carte de visite from S and T.E. Robbins, a portrait of the Baptist minister, Rev R.Reynoldson. The mount is square cornered and on the reverse is pasted a small rectangular label with the text "S & T.E. Robbins, Chemists and Druggists, photographic Chemists and Artists, Norfolk St East, Wisbech". The label is typical of a Victorian printed chemist's label for general use on bottles, pots, paper wrappings and pill boxes. This might have been a temporary expedient or may have been the normal way that this firm mounted their cartes. We are most grateful to the Wisbech and Fenland Museum for permission to use this image from their collection of cartes de visite.

Name:  ROBERTS, B  b:       d:
Address: 31 Hurstingstone, St Ives
Working Dates: c.1971

Name:  ROBERTSON, Stanley (Stan).  b:  19.8.1925 Louth, Lincs.     d: 22.11.2015 Cambridge
Address: Stearn's 72 Bridge Street, Cambridge and Eaden Lilley, Market St, Cambridge
Working Dates: c.1948 - c.1995
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: In the latter half of the 1940s Stan Robertson joined the RAF, probably as a civilian, as there is no recollection of him having been in uniform, and worked as a ‘dietician’, serving meals to hospital patients at RAF Cosford. Following his spell with the RAF, Stanley returned with the family to Hull. Here he was taught the rudiments of photography by his sister, Joan, who was associated with Leach of Brighouse at her studio in Thornton Varley’s in Hull. Stanley worked as a relief photographer in stores around the country and this brought him to Cambridge in late 1948 where he lodged with a Mrs. Wright and her daughter Joan. [Stan and Joan married in 1950]

Stan was able to settle in Cambridge and worked at Stearn's at 72, Bridge Street. At some point Stearn's parent company, Leach of Brighouse, was acquired by Hunting PLC and they relocated the operation to Eaden Lilley in Market Street Cambridge. The precise date of this move is not known, but there is some evidence to suggest that it was in 1955. Later the operation was acquired outright by Eaden Lilley. The photographic department undertook portraiture and other commercial photography. In 1984 they described themselves as “The University Photography Specialists”. Matriculation was always a busy time as were Graduation Days, May Balls and key sporting fixtures such as the Varsity Rugby and Boat Race. Stan was a well-recognised figure. The 1970 Matriculation photograph at Newnham College gave Stan his 15 minutes of national fame when 2 male students from Pembroke infiltrated the all-female picture. The Daily Mirror ran the story on Page 3; 6th November 1970. Stan became an associate of the Master Photographers Association in 1963 and the National President of the MPA in 1986. He retired from Eaden Lilley in his early 60s and worked on a consultancy basis into his 70s.

References: We are most grateful to Stan's son, Steve Robertson, for this account of his father's life and work.

Name: ROSS, Peter b:1854 Manchester d:1897

Working Dates: c.1888 in Cambridgeshire
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: There was a photographic artist called Peter Ross b: 1854 Manchester living at 40 Commercial Road, Spalding in the 1881 census. He was living with his wife Ellen M b:1859 Grainthorpe Lincs and daughter Carrie b:1880 Spalding. In 1891 Peter was still a photographer in Spalding living at 20 Swann Street. His family comprised wife Ellen M, daughter Carrie, sons John W b:1882 Spalding and Edward A b:1889 March Cambridgeshire. The birth of their youngest son in 1889 ties in with the appearance of Peter in the local March Trade Directory in 1888. The family remained in Spalding until Peter's death and beyond. It seems likely that his association with March was relatively short lived. The carte de visite below of an unknown blond haired infant has had the lower cm or so trimmed to fit in an album. The reverse of the mount has the legend "From the Photographic Studio of P.Ross, Broad Street, March", a different address to that listed by Kelly in 1888.

Name: RYLANDS, Joseph b:1836  Rothwell Yorkshire     d:1895
Address: Cambridge - at some point at 20 St Andrews Street,
Working Dates: c.1870s
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: In 1861 and 1871 Joseph was lodging at 24 Earl Street Cambridge with a bookbinder, John Hawes b: 1821 Birmingham. Joseph was a photographer and in 1871 was a photographer employing 1 man and a boy. In 1880 it is possible that Joseph was operating in Doncaster. A report in the Sheffield Independent of 8th January 1880 concerning an explosion mentions that a photograph of the damaged premises was produced by Doncaster photographer Mr Joseph Ryland. (note the missing "s" from the surname) In 1881 Joseph was a boarder at 37 Blue Bell Hill Nottingham, where he was shown as a photographer. In 1891 Joseph was boarding at 13 Cooke Street Hulme Manchester, where he was being employed as a book keeper.

The first carte de visite below is a head and shoulders portrait of an unknown young man. It is mounted on a square cornered cream card mount with the name "Mayland Cambridge" on the face. On the reverse is printed "J Rylands, successor to Mayland Cambridge photographer to HRH The Prince of Wales". It seems likely that Joseph Rylands was initially employed by one of the other Cambridge photographers. Mayland was at 20 St Andrews Street Cambridge, but moved to London in 1870. It is possible that Joseph Rylands took over Mayland's business then, or possibly later when the premises were being offered to let in 1875.

See below for a carte de visite of a young man in side profile, the carte has square corners and is mounted on white card. On the face is written "J Rylands Cambridge" and on the reverse is "J Rylands Cambridge copies can be obtained at any time". There is a Prince of Wales feathers design with the text. The carte is from the 1870s.
