Narrow Street Studio Peterborough - see PHILLIPS, Squire

Name: NAYLOR, Robert          b: 1834      d:1912
Address: 58 Sidney Street, Cambridge
Working Dates: c.1875 in Cambridge
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: There is a single trade directory entry in 1875 for this photographer. There are no obvious candidates for Robert Naylor, a photographer in Cambridge in the 1871 or 1881 Census returns. One possibility is that this was Robert C Nayler, a London photographer b:1834 St Marylebone see www.photolondon.org.uk/pages/details.asp?pid=5573 who might have moved out of London briefly in the mid 1870s. David Simkin, who runs the excellent Sussex Photo History site recognised a possible connection with a Sussex photographer and writes: The "Robert Naylor" listed as a photographer at 58 Sidney Street, Cambridge was possibly the Robert Covington Nayler (1834-1912) who worked as a photographer in London, Hastings and the West Midlands. Between 1875 and 1883, Nayler was working away from London, possibly as a travelling or itinerant photographer. In 1875, Nayler's 2nd wife, Elizabeth, was still based in London, expecting her third child by Nayler. (Elizabeth gave birth to her daughter Ida in 1876). It is possible that Robert Nayler was working in the Cambridge area between the birth of his second daughter, Eliza Kate (1874) and the birth of his third, Ida (1876). Robert C. Nayler returned to London around 1884.  Robert Covington Nayler died in the North London district of Islington in 1912 at the age of 78.  See the panel headed "Robert Nayler's Photographic Career after 1870" on my Sussex PhotoHistory website: http://photohistory-sussex.co.uk/HaspPhotgrsNa-No.htm"

Name:  NEECH (or NEACH), Friday Allen  b: 1859 Cambridge   d:1906
Address: 7 Causeway Court, Cambridge
Working Dates: c.1874 -1881
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: Between around 1874 and 1876 Friday Allen Neech was employed as a photographic assistant by William Nichols and Sons. He then became an apprentice photographer to Thomas Vipond at Grantham. from early 1876. A year later he fell out with his new master in a spectacular way, alleging an assault by his master, and in turn being accused of stealing photographs and cases from his master. Both allegations were thrown out by the local magistrates, the latter after Ed William Nichols from Cambridge had attended the court and given evidence in Neech's favour. In the 1881 Census, Friday Neech was a photographer and frame maker at the above address (possibly back working for William Nichols and Sons?). He was living with his wife Elizabeth b:1859 Newmarket, their baby daughter Laurie E. b:1880 and a lodger. By 1891 Friday and his growing family of 6 children were living at 135 Gwydir Street, Cambridge and his occupation was shown as a painter. In 1901 he was shown as a jobbing builder and decorator living at 9 South Street Cambridge. Friday's career as a photographer may have been very short. He does not appear in that trade in any local trade directories, but in the 1892 Kelly's Directory he is listed at 135 Gwdir Street as a painter and house decorator.

References: Flight, a magazine concerned with aero engineering and airships, records in its issue of Nov 8th 1923 that a new company had been registered: "Aerial Photo Co (Peterborough) Ltd at 24 Long Causeway Peterborough with a capital of £2000 in £1 shares". The new company had acquired the business carried on at Peterborough as the "Aerial Photo Co" and the "Nene Photo Co", under agreement with John Borrill Etches (1878-1942) and Joseph Whitman (1875-1951), who were both lifetime Directors of the new company. John Borrill Etches (1878-1942) was listed in the 1911 Census as a commercial photographer, working on his own account at his home at Audries Villa, Dogsthorpe Road, Peterborough - which may or may not be an address associated with the Nene Photo Co. No trace has yet been found of the Nene Photo Co in Peterborough Directories. In the 1921 Census Joseph Whitman was a photographic trade printer and an employer operating at 24 Long Causeway, Peterborough. His home address was 38 Princes Street, Peterborough.
