Alfred Hendrey - Supplementary Page
Our main entries for Alfred Hendrey, his wife and two sons are here.
Alfred Hendrey was more consistent than many other photographers featured on this site in recording the negative numbers on his cartes de visite and cabinet photographs. He changed the design of his mounts quite frequently. Hendrey was also a popular and prolific photographer, meaning that quite large numbers of his photographs have survived. This has enabled us to put together the following dating chart from negative numbers and changes to the design of his mounts and the information printed thereon.
The table below picks out features from the illustrations of Hendrey's work which appear below the table. From the few photographs which have a known date it would appear that Alfred was producing just over 1000 negatives per year between 1878 and 1881, but we do not know how typical these years were compared with his longer term career. Taken over the longer term, the business operated for approximately 40 years and the highest negative numbers found are in the region of 40,000, again suggesting an average of around 1000 negatives per year. However, It is highly likely that there was a variation from year to year. For example it appears that almost 11,000 negatives had been taken by 1878, that is in the first four years or so of operation.
The changes to the design of mounts also helps to some extent with dating, but collector Michael Brown points out that Hendrey did not consistently use up a whole batch of mounts before moving on to the next design. He would occasionally, and briefly, revert to an earlier mount design, perhaps using up any part packs he had put to one side.
It has only been possible to construct this page due to extensive help from The Simpson Family Archive, Michael Brown and Malcolm Fletcher, to whom we offer our grateful thanks.

Similar carte de visite to negative no 14556 shown above. 3/4 length portrait of a woman standing by a stone pedestal. Cream mount with plain front; reverse has a design with a ribbon and lettering in a twig and branch rustic font "From Hendrey's Art Studio Godmanchester and St Ives" Also in this design are the two medals Hendrey won in 1881 at Newcastle on Tyne and Falmouth. The difference in negative numbers suggests a few years elapsed between the use of this mount and the earlier similar one without the two medals. Yet the similarity in design suggests that these mounts may have been used consecutively. More likely mounts from different batches may have been used in a fairly random manner over the years. No negative number - portrait of an unknown lady, reverse blank. midget carte de visite by A. Hendrey (Michael Brown Collection)

Cabinet Portrait of an unknown young man, "H" monogram on face, no negative number "A Hendry Art Photographer Medalist Studios, Godmanchester and St Ives" (Michael Brown Collection) Note this has Hendrey's name wrongly spelled with the final "e" omitted. We are most grateful to Malcolm Fletcher for spotting this - see also the next two examples below.

These two cartes, a midget carte and a standard sized carte, with cameo portraits, are from Malcolm Fletcher's Collection. Neither have negative numbers. Both have an "H" monogram. Both have incorrect spelling of Hendrey's name and yet these have been used with customers' prints. Is it possible that nobody in the firm noticed the error or did Hendrey have these discounted by his supplier? As they have been used for customers we can be sure that he did not send them back. (Malcolm Fletcher Collection)

Hendrey's Imperial Portrait, portrait of an unknown young child, oval embossed mount, by A.Hendrey, Godmanchester - no negative number (Michael Brown Collection)
