Name:  FIELD, E(benezer?)   b:1835 Cambridge  d: 1917
Address: Regent Street Cambridge (1861-71) 16 Hills Road, opposite St Paul's Church, Cambridge (1881-1888), 30 Hills Road Cambridge (1891-1917)
Working Dates: As a photographer - 1880s?
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: See below a carte de visite of an unknown woman posed leaning against the back of a tall chair (possibly 1880s) - face of carte shows "E Field photo - chemist Cambridge". Reverse states "Photographed by E.Field 16 Hills Road, opposite St Paul's Church, Cambridge Further copies can be had". The cream card mount has square corners. Ebenezer Field was a Cambridge chemist and druggist. In 1851 he was an apprentice druggist living with his parents in Fitzroy Street Cambridge. His father, George Field, b:1804 Paxton Hunts, was a tailor and hatter. In 1861 Ebenezer was a chemist in Regent St Cambridge with a wife Betsy (Elizabeth b:1839 Cambridge) and daughter Harriett. In 1871 Ebenezer was a chemist and druggist at 37 Regent Street Cambridge, in 1881 and 1888 he was living and working as a chemist and druggist at 16 Hills Road, Cambridge. In 1891, 1901 and 1911 Ebenezer was at 30 Hills Road operating as a chemist and druggist. Did they change premises, or was the road re-numbered? The 1916 Kelly's Directory shows the firm at 30 Hills Road as a chemist and druggist and photographic materials dealer. Ebenezer and Elizabeth had 10 children, all born in Cambridge: Harriett b:1861, Clara b:1863, Alice b:1865, Ebenezer b 1867, Lomas b:1869, Arthur b.1871, George b:1873, William J b:1875, Edith Ann b:1877 and Ernest Harry b:1880. At different times it appears that William J, Ernest Harry, Ebenezer (Jnr), Edith Ann and George worked as assistants in the chemist and druggist business. None of the census returns show Ebenezer Snr or Jnr or Ernest Harry as a photographer. Of the "E.Fields", Ebenezer Snr is the most likely to have been the photographer of the 1880s. Ebenezer Field is shown in a 1913 Directory as a Cambridge Borough Councillor. Ebenezer may also have been part of the partnership of Wilson and Field.
References: By 1921 the firm operating the chemist shop at 30 Hills Road was E.H.Field and according to the 1921 census, the only person resident at that address was Edith A Field, who was a chemist's assistant.

Later he took up farming with his brother, and appeared as a farmer in Fordham in the 1871 and 1881 census returns. In the weeks before his death in 1886 Robert spoke of taking up photography again. He was for many years Collector of Queen's Taxes and Rate Collector for the parish. Robert was well known as a highly skilled calligrapher and his services were much in demand. He helped with writing connected with the assessment work for several parishes of the Newmarket Union, helped the Surveyor with his parish accounts, drew up wills and other documents for his neighbours, besides being always willing to lend a hand to the illiterate in their private correspondence. A March 2023 Ebay offering in the US was a cdv portrait of an unidentified young child standing on a chair. This was on a plain cream mount backstamped with an oval design made from the words "R.K.Fletcher Fordham, Cambridgeshire. Robert does not appear as a photographer in any local trade directories, and so his photographic career may have only lasted a few years.

Address: 12 Manor Street Cambridge in 1881
Working Dates: c.1881 Cambridge, then until at least 1911 in Chester.

In 1861, William, 5 years old was living with his parents and siblings in Ram Yard Cambridge. By 1871 the family had moved to 12 Manor Street, and had a student lodger, which no doubt helped make ends meet. By 1891 William had married and moved away from Cambridge. He was living at 15 Tarvin Road Chester with his wife Elizabeth Nee Jones b: 1851 Chester and her sister Sarah Jones b: 1853 Chester, who was living on her own means. William's occupation was shown as a photo artist, an employee. By 1891 William was a photographer working on his own account at 34 St Martin in the Fields, Chester. His wife Elizabeth and her sister Sarah were both shown as living on their own means. In 1901 William, Elizabeth and Sarah were all at the same address and William was a photographer working on his own account. In 1911 William was still a photographer working from home on his own account at 11 Eastgate Row North, Chester. He was living there with his wife Elizabeth. According to the records at Stationers Hall, an Edward Fromont of St Martin in the Fields, Chester, created the copyright in a photograph of Kings Arms interior, situate at the Eastgate, Chester, which was registered on 28 May 1902 (COPY 1/455/530).
