Name: CADMAN, (or CODMAN or CODAMAN) John. b.1840 Norwich d. 1889
Address: Itinerant travelling photographer, various locations including Ely, Ashley, near Newmarket, Warboys, St Ives, Norwich, Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Yorkshire.
Working Dates: c. 1870s, 1880s
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: Newspaper reports and census returns have various spellings of this travelling photographer's surname as above, all believed to be the same individual. The first reference found is in the Cambridge Chronicle and Journal, Saturday 1 June 1867 p7, " ISLE MAGISTRACY. ELY DIVISION, May 30. (Before the Rev. George Hall.) John Codman, traveling photographer, was charged by John Westrope, confectioner, with wilful damage to his property, at Ely fair. Settled out of Court, by arrangement, complainant paying 13s, defendant, 3s.6d". Cadman's presence is next recorded in the East of the County in 1870, following an incident where his three horses were impounded, either as strays or because they were trespassing on someone else's pasture. The Cambridge Chronicle and Journal, Saturday 25 June 1870 p7 reported: "Newmarket Petty Sessions June 21. Releasing impounded horses. John Cadman, an itinerant photograph artist, was charged by Mr John Seeley, the Pindar, of Ashley, with having on the 12th instant released his three horses from his custody, they having been legally impounded. On going to the pound on the day mentioned, Seeley found that the lock had been broken and the horses gone, and on searching he found them in the defendant's possession. Fined £1 with 18s costs." The Cambridge Chronicle and Journal, Saturday 25 February 1871 p8 records: "St Ives Petty Sessions. John Codman, photographer of Warboys was charged with trespass in pursuit of game on land in the occupation of Mr Thomas Ekins of Warboys on the 25th ult. Convicted, fines £2 costs 16s 6d". In the England Census returns for 1871 there is a John Codaman b: Norwich 1840 listed as a photographer in a caravan (one of 18 so listed, presumably a fair, occupied by traveling showmen, travelers, a bazaar keeper and toy seller) at Castle Meadow, Norwich with a Charles Bushell, b 1847, Downham, Norfolk, a servant. The Bedfordshire Times and Independent, Saturday 20 September 1873 p6. reports on proceedings at Leighton Buzzard Petty Sessions. "John Cadman, a travelling photographer, was charged with encamping upon the highway at Heath and Reach on the 2nd inst. From the evidence of PC Edmunds it appeared that the defendant had, on the night in question put up at a public house in the neighborhood, but at 10 o'clock he left the inn, proceeded along the road with a van and two horses, and when near a wood encamped by the road side turning his horses astray at one o'clock. The animals were found at a distance of 300 yards from the van, in which defendant was found asleep. He had previously been warned that he would not be allowed to remain by the side of the road during the night. The wheels of the van were near the centre of the highway. The magistrates considered it a bad case and fined defendant £2 and 12s. costs." The Norwich Post, Tuesday 1 June 1875 p8 report on the Newmarket Petty Sessions. "Encamping upon the Highway. John Codman, who described himself as an itinerant photographer, and Mary Ann Gray, a travelling gypsy, were charged by PC Longstaff with encamping with their horses and vans upon tho highway between Burwell and Swaffham, on Sunday, the 16th inst.— The officer said that when he went to where they were encamping, the vans were on the side of the road and the horses were loose and grazing some distance off. The parties were sitting by a fire they had made upon the side of the road, and when they saw him going towards them they got up and went after their horses. He went to the fire and found a large quantity of the shells of partridges' eggs.— The Magistrates informed defendants that the extreme penalty was 40s, and fined them 5s. each and 14s.6d. costs in each case, which was at once paid.". In the Lynn Advertiser, Saturday 01 April 1876 p.7, there is a report on cases at Downham Petty Sessions, Monday, 27th March. There John Cadman, photographer, Downham Market, was charged by P.C. Steward with allowing two horses to stray on the highway at Wimbotsham on the 19th inst., and Cadman was fined 5/ and costs 12/-. It would appear that Cadman moved further North. In the 1881 Census for High and Low Bishopside, Harrogate, Yorkshire, John Codman 43 b Norwich, photographer, is listed, with his wife Annie, aged 20, b Yorks Malton, and their son William, 4 months, b. Pateley Bridge Yorks.

Address: Dales Brewery, Gwydir Street, Cambridge.
Working Dates: 1984 - 2004
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: The Cambridge Darkroom was a pioneering photographic gallery and community photography workshop. The venture grew out of the St Matthews Photo Workshop, a small group which had started to meet in 1978. The Cambridge Darkroom opened at the former Dales Brewery in Gwydir Street, Cambridge, in 1984. The founding Directors of the company behind the Darkroom were: Roy Hammans, Brian Human, Colen Lumley, Peter Soar and Edward Wright. The Cambridge Darkroom closed in 2004. One of the best remembered exhibitions at the Darkroom was its 1986 Fen Archive, showing the works of Samuel Smith, Lilian Ream, Margaret George, W.Martin Lane, and Anthony Day (all of whom are listed individually on this site). Directors of the Company, solicitor Peter Soar and Roy Hammans recorded photographs of the changing urban landscape of Cambridge in the 1970s and 1980s respectively. Many of their works can be found on Roy Hammans’ Golden Fleece site below. Although the Cambridge Darkroom was not a conventional photographer’s studio, we have included this entry as local and family historians may well come across prints and catalogues from their exhibitions and educational work.

(Mike Petty, Cambridgeshire Collection, records that the firm's negatives were destroyed Jan 1975)

In 1901 Robert was living at Jesus Terrace Cambridge with his widowed mother, sister and two brothers. His occupation was shown as "tobacconist", working on his own account. In 1907 Robert Owen Cambridge, then a photographer, living at 115 Mill Road Cambridge, successfully applied at the Cambridge Borough Police Court for a vaccination exemption certificate. This was on the grounds that he did not believe in the efficacy of vaccination and when previously living in Colchester had obtained an exemption certificate for his two youngest children. That same year Robert appeared on the list of Special Constables for the Borough. In 1909 Robert and family were still resident at 115 Mill Road, which they rented for £20-16-0 per annum, when the property was sold by auction. The 1911 census shows Robert Owen Cambridge with his wife and 4 young children at 40 Mill Rd Cambridge, working as a photographer on his own account. In 1918 Robert was granted three months exemption from military service on business and domestic grounds. He was then living at 52 Mill Road and his occupation was photographer and picture frame maker. In the 1921 census Robert, his wife and four children were living at 52 Mill Road, where he was a photographer and picture frame maker working at home on his own account.

Address: 18 Mill Road Cambridge
Working Dates: c. 1962 -
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information:
References: Campkins (A Sidney Campkin and Sons) grew from the 1940s from a small chemist and optician shop at 11 Rose Crescent Cambridge, which could trace its history back to 1800, when started by an apothecary William Brewster. Over subsequent years the firm expanded with a number of camera shops in Cambridge, including KP Professionals, and its own film processing laboratory, Anglia Photoworks, in Devonshire Road, Cambridge. In Spaldings 1965/6 Directory of Cambridge the listing is Cameras Supplies 18 Mill Road, Cambridge. The firm was run by Thomas Howell, a chemist and optician, who joined the firm in around 1942 and developed it into a business employing over 100 people with shops and studios in Cambridge, Peterborough, Lincoln, London and Dublin, operating in photography, hi-fi and opticians. The photographers running this studio for Campkins were Doug Rattle, followed by Brian Woodruff (who later headed the photographic department of the Cambridgeshire Constabulary for many years). See also ANGLIA SUPERCOLOUR STUDIO - another business possibly part of the group.

Name:  CASTER, George Coborn     b: 1850      d:12/1/1914
Address: Market Place and Cathedral Gateway, Peterborough
Working Dates: c.1884 - 1887, possibly later
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: The 1891 census lists Caster as "printer bookseller and stationer", living in London Road Fletton. In 1901 he was at the same address, described as: "Printer, publisher and stationer". The 1911 census shows him as a "printer and publisher". See below a carte de visite (author's collection) from Geo C Caster, The Cathedral Studio, Peterborough, c.1885. This is a carbon print on cream mount with rounded corners. The reverse of the carte advertises Caster as "Artist and Photographer, Miniature and Portrait painter", stating that "portraits can be finished in oils, water colours or crayons". Clearly this is a top quality carte de visite. Below this is a cabinet photograph of an unknown woman and child, in an almost identical format save that the name on the face of the mount is "George C Caster" rather than "Geo C Caster". There is no negative number of the mount of the Cabinet photograph to show which is the older of the two. In the Stamford Mercury, 18 Feb 1887, p8, Castor advertised, "Canvassers wanted to take orders for high class framed portraits, liberal commission - Apply G.C.Castor, the Cathedral Photographic Studio, Market Place, Peterborough". (Thanks to Garry Monger for this reference). George Caster had the Cathedral Studio after Thomas Groves and before Harry Marriott. George Caster was also a printer and publisher. Why was he only working as a photographer for such a short period? It seems likely that George Caster was actually a photographer, rather than a printer, who diversified and employed a photographer for that part of the business. This is born out by the fact that in July 1884 Caster submitted eight of his photographs (a mix of cartes de visite and cabinet photos, to Stationers' Hall to establish copyright. Seven of these depicted the Bishop of Peterborough and one the Dean. These are the TNA references: COPY 1/369/41, COPY 1/369/43, COPY 1/369/44, COPY 1/369/45, COPY 1/369/39, COPY 1/369/42, COPY 1/369/40, COPY 1/369/56. The firm continued publishing local postcards well into the 20th Century. The Peterborough Advertiser,10/8 /1912 p2 has an article on the choir stalls in the Minster and captions one illustration "H.Plowman, Caster Post Card Series". Harry Plowman, b.1877 Peterborough, d.1952, resided in the Minster Precincts at Peterborough in 1911 and was at that time a Cathedral Verger, son of the former Cathedral Sexton. In 1891 Harry worked as a printers errand boy, so may have had long term connections with Caster. Harry was definitely a photographer as he registered two of his photographs of the Peterborough Cathedral clock at Stationers Hall for copyright purposes in 1905 and 1906. COPY1/482/171, COPY1/501/266, but photography may have been a secondary interest.

Name: CHRISTIAN, John Hamilton      b: 1874 Peterborough       d:1942
Address: Salisbury Buildings, 48 Park Road, Peterborough
Working Dates: c.1901-7
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: In January 1900 John placed an advertisement in the Peterborough Advertiser apologising to potential customers for keeping them waiting for the opening of his new premises at Salisbury Buildings Park Road, Peterborough. In the meantime he informed his public that he had a showcase with examples of his work at the corner of Park Road and Fitzwilliam Street. John gave his background in the advertisement as being "Late with Owen's of Salisbury and Bournemouth , photographers to Royalty" (This would have been James Owen 1848-1903 Art Photographer). In his advertisement John was offering Silver Bromide, platinotypes and carbon prints. In 1901 John was a lodger in Granville Street Peterborough; his occupation was shown as a photographer working on his own account. The 1911 census shows that Hamilton had moved out of the area and was living with his wife, Winifred, at 81 Lydhurst Avenue, Streatham Hill, Brixton, London S, where he was working as a cinematograph photographer as a worker in animated pictures. See below for a cabinet photograph (author's collection) with a vignette of a young man. This is mounted on a buff and medium brown card mount with embossed border. On the face: "Hamilton Christian, Peterborough." On the reverse "From the Photographic Studio of Hamilton Christian, Park Road, Peterborough. Additional copies can always be obtained. Enlargements in all styles" The reverse is embellished with scrolls, flowers and a butterfly. The card mount is by W. Herrmann & Co, Berlin and London - their name is printed at the bottom of the reverse. Christian may have closed down his business before his final entry in the 1907 local trade directory. He placed the following advertisement in the British Journal of Photography, 16 March 1906, p.xix "Background bargains. 8 x 8 ft exterior. 8 x 7 staircase and gate combination with foreground and 8 x 13 continuous graduated black to grey, all distemper on canvas, fine condition. Cost £2 each, sell 15s and 18s each. Christian, Photographer, Peterborough." Christian also engaged in "cheap work" as shown by the next example. This is a small portrait of an unknown young woman, her hair piled high on her head, tied at the back with a wide ribbon. The photograph is in a pale green card mount 2.7 x 3.75 inches with an oval aperture surrounded by an impressed scroll design. The image (about 2 x 1.5 inches) is held in place by a stuck-down brown paper backing sheet on which is stamped, with a rubber stamp,"The American Midget" and "J. Hamilton Christian", but no address. This appears to date from around 1905-10. In an advertisement in the Peterborough Express 20 December 1905 p.3, J. Hamilton Christian offered Cabinets 10s, Cartes 5s, adding "and don't forget our famous American Midgets at 1s per dozen."
