Ford might, or might not have taken over any photographic business from the Bailey family. In the 1921 Census Albert's sole occupation was shown as the Kings Cliffe sub postmaster. His wife, Annie, was an elementary teacher at the village school.

Name:  BAILEY, H      b:       d:

However, the cabinet photograph below of two unknown boys is clearly by H Bailey, but with an address in the High Street.

Name:  BAILEY, J and H
Address: High Street Kings Cliffe, Wansford, Peterborough. and Market Street Oundle, Northants
Working Dates: 1870s / 1880s ?
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: The carte de visite below of a young girl with brooch and locket is from the 1870s/80s. The mount has been cropped on the bottom edge so there may have been print on the missing part. The mount is cream card with a broad and a very narrow red border. The reverse has what appears to be a rubber stamp backstamp "From J and H Bailey, photographers, High Street King's Cliffe and Market Street Oundle." It is not clear whether J and H Bailey are a combination of one or two of the Bailey's listed here, and perhaps another Bailey.

He often over-booked on Saturday and rang us urgently to help with a wedding which he could not cover. A great entertainer he went to Boston to compere dances with Mavis and I. We set up a small studio on the landing of the dance floor and took pictures of the dancers as they relaxed.  He had a shop at Holbeach and I often gave him a lift home. He then retired from social photography and took over the Fort St George PH in Cambridge." No other details of Bob Bainbridge have yet been discovered.

Name:  BAKER-SMITH, Ethelbert William    b: 1875 Gt Yarmouth  d: 1960
Address: 18 Mill Road Cambridge (Cambridge Studio) (formerly the studio of Herbert Charles Mason 1901-1911. Later these premises were taken over by Campkins). 217 Hills Road Cambridge from 1916.
Working Dates: 1911-1953
Subjects, styles, advertising, other relevant information: Ethelbert William Smith was born in Great Yarmouth, the son of Ethelbert Royal Hubbard Smith, fish merchant. Ethelbert married Bertha Alice Eagar in Cambridge in 1901 and from that point onwards added "Baker", his mother's maiden name, to his surname. He was listed in local trade directories as a photographer at 18 Mill Road Cambridge between 1916 and 1953. Ethelbert does not seem to have promoted his business with regular newspaper adverting, but instead seems to have relied upon personal recommendation and the footfall around his Studio at the City end of Mill Road. Surprisingly, given Ethelbert's 40 plus years of business, survivals of his work are not particularly plentiful. See below a postcard print c 1920s, of a very young child in fur edged bonnet, wedged on a strange studio prop. The reverse of the card has a divided back with Kodak's "KLtd" in the stamp box. The front of the card has been impressed in the lower right hand corner with an embossing press with the legend "Cambridge Studio 18. Mill Road Cambridge" detail shown below. Below this is a well composed small wedding group from the 1940s, the photograph is 6in x 4in on a cream mount. The cream mount has the same embossed mark as shown above. It is not known whether Ethelbert produced topographical postcards, but a newspaper report on the unveiling of was memorials at St Botolph's Church advertised postcards of the memorials available from the studio at 18 Mill Road (Cambridge Daily News, Friday 11 June 1920 p4). Ethelbert lived at 119 Mawson Rd Cambridge in 1911 with his wife Bertha Alice b:1876 Milltown, Kerry, Ireland and children Christopher Robert b:1903 Cambridge and Francis Malcolm b:1908 Cambridge. In the 1911 census return, Ethelbert was shown as a photographer and an employer, likewise in 1921. The 1939 Register shows Ethelbert as a professional photographer, living at 217 Hills Road, Cambridge. When he died in 1960 Ethelbert resided at 217 Hills Road Cambridge, the home address recorded for him in local directories from 1916.
